Safe knowledge
Which safe do the police recommend?
When deciding on a safe, we recommend a product that has been tested or certified according to EN 1143-1 and has at least grade 0 or grade N (zero). In addition, the safe should be installed by qualified personnel. The police have special advice centers and a “K-burglary” team. These officers specialize in providing preventive advice and creating a suitable security concept for everyone.
Which furniture safe is inconspicuous?
The ideal furniture safe integrates harmoniously into the living environment and remains inconspicuous to unauthorized persons such as tradesmen, cleaning staff, guests or, in the worst case, burglars. It is essential that it adapts to the furnishings in both color and style and, at best, is firmly integrated into the furnishings.
What is the difference between a vault and a safe?
Safe and safe – size matters. The word safe comes from the Greek "thésauros" and means treasury. So it is a very large storage location, more precisely a vault. In some cases, the term "bank safe" is also used because banks have smaller lockers in which customers can deposit their valuables. So there are safes and safes. Safes and safes are also known in large companies and in industry, although modular safes are more commonly used there. This refers to safe rooms that can be built into an existing building later or during the construction phase.
A safe is also a place to store valuables. However, it does not refer to a room or chamber, but rather to smaller safes such as furniture and wall safes. In contrast to large safes, safes are mainly used in private homes. Mini safes are also available for vehicles. Over the centuries, safes and safes have changed greatly in size, material composition and appearance. Their history dates back to the Middle Ages when people began storing their valuable possessions in various types of containers. Even the church used safes and safes to keep their precious relics safe.
The sturdiest safes of the time were often made of wood, reinforced with iron plates and secured with multiple locks. Individual adjustments in size and design were common; everyone could have their own safe made as needed. From 1992 onwards, these traditional methods were expanded to include European testing and quality standards. Since then, safes and safes have been subject to various security requirements that must withstand both theft and fire.
What criteria should you consider when buying a safe?
Resistance level and insurance coverage. The insurance coverage depends on the level of resistance of a safe and its attachment.
This level of resistance indicates how resistant the safe is to attempts to break into it and is determined in extensive tests according to precise standards by neutral testing and certification bodies. We recommend only buying safes that have been certified by independent institutions such as VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH or the ECB of the testing organization ESSA and have corresponding badges as proof. Only safes that have been tested and certified according to Euro standards guarantee a high level of security. The higher the resistance level of the safe, the higher the insurance coverage for the contents. When choosing the level of resistance, as with choosing the size, it should be taken into account that the requirements may tend to increase over time.
We recommend checking with the insurance company before purchasing a safe, as in some industries or for certain uses, insured sums set require a certain level of resistance. Your safe can be equipped with components for integration into an intruder alarm system (EMA). By connecting to a tested and certified burglar alarm system, insurance coverage usually increases significantly.
Choosing the right safe size
Before buying a safe, it is important to think about the items you want to store. It should be taken into account that over time more and more values and documents can accumulate. It is therefore advisable to choose a safe that offers enough space.
You should not only think of traditional valuables such as cash and jewelry, but also important documents such as contracts and balance sheets in a business context, as well as personal documents such as financial papers, ID cards and vehicle documents in the private sector. Electronic devices such as laptops, cameras and hard drives as well as collectibles such as stamps and coins are also often the target of theft and should therefore be stored safely in the safe.
Selecting the appropriate safe type
In the living area, we recommend furniture safes such as our Balzblock, which ideally complement the existing furniture design and are therefore hardly noticeable. Most people choose a floor-standing safe that is placed firmly on the floor. A furniture safe can be discreetly integrated into an existing piece of furniture. Wall or floor safes are also popular. Please note that these safe types must be embedded or anchored in the wall or floor in accordance with specific technical specifications. They are therefore more suitable for new buildings or renovations. We would be happy to help you choose the type of safe that best suits your needs!
Burglary protection: A safe offers security in an emergency
Safes are available in different resistance levels, which indicate how long they would withstand an attempted break-in. The level of resistance depends on the contents of the safe and should be chosen accordingly. On the “Safes/Safe Information” page you will find a table from which you can see up to which insured sum and which level of resistance can be insured.
What is a fire safe?
Double security for your valuables. In addition to burglary protection, safes can also be equipped with fire protection. These so-called duplex safes combine two protective functions in one: They protect valuables from both burglary and fire. In everyday life, they are often referred to as document safes.
A safe with a tested fire protection class offers 30, 60 or 120 minutes of protection against fire, fire smoke and extinguishing water. Depending on your needs, there are different combinations of burglary and resistance levels. In high-quality safes, the fire-retardant property is usually already included due to their high quality.
When is a gun safe necessary?
According to the provisions of the new weapons law, hunters, sport shooters, weapon owners as well as security companies and authorities such as police or customs are obliged to protect their weapons from access by third parties.
The new weapons law has been in force since July 6th, 2017. According to its regulations, at least one safety container according to DIN/EN 1143-1, resistance level 0, is required. Since then, the procurement of gun safes according to VDMA 24992 is no longer permitted.
Resistance level N/0: Resistance level N/0 allows the free storage of long weapons as well as up to 5 handguns and ammunition. With a weight of over 200 kg or a corresponding anchoring, up to 10 handguns can be safely stored.
Resistance level I: Resistance level I allows the free storage of long guns, handguns and ammunition without limiting the quantity.
How is a safe or gun safe anchored?
Although the weapons law does not explicitly require anchoring for certain levels of resistance, anchoring is an important safety aspect. For example, if an N/0 cabinet weighing less than 200 kg is anchored to a breakaway weight of over 200 kg, more handguns can be enclosed accordingly. It is important to note that each state has different regulations; Therefore, the regulations should definitely be clarified with the respective district office.
Information sheets from the police authorities emphasize that gun safes weighing less than 1,000 kg should be anchored in order to further increase security. We also strongly recommend such anchoring to ensure maximum safety.
Where can a gun safe be located?
According to the provisions of the Weapons Act, a weapon safe must be installed in a permanently inhabited and monitored location. Otherwise, the gun safe must meet Class 1 standards and contain a maximum of three long guns. Storing handguns and ammunition in such a cabinet is not permitted.
We strongly advise you to clarify this question with your local weapons authority.
What requirements does a gun safe have to meet?
According to the current provisions of the Weapons Act, gun safes purchased from July 7, 2017 must meet at least safety standard 0 or better 1 according to the EN 1143-1 standard. These gun safes are certified and have a plaque on the inside of the door that documents and guarantees their compliance. Often, local gun authorities will request a photo of this plaque as well as a copy of the purchase invoice for the gun safe. There may also be an on-site inspection to check storage conditions. Existing Class A and B gun safes enjoy grandfathering protection and may continue to be used; However, new purchases of these resistance classes are no longer permitted. The classification is based on the wall thickness of the gun cabinet. “A” stands for a single-walled cabinet and “B” for a double-walled cabinet.
Is safe maintenance necessary?
Even a safe from a brand manufacturer needs to be serviced regularly, ideally every three to five years. The maintenance measures include, among others:
- Inspection and maintenance of the moving parts (e.g. locking mechanism) - renewal of the lubricants
- Inspection and maintenance of the hinges and sealing strips
- Inspection of the mechanical and electronic input units
These components are subject to natural wear, in particular due to hardening or resinification of the lubricants. Therefore, a safe should not be placed in a location that is exposed to direct sunlight. Hardened lubricants are often the reason for sluggish locking mechanisms and can mean that a safe can no longer be opened.
Are electronic safe locks more prone to such problems?
It is rare for a safe to break overnight and no longer be able to be opened. With purely mechanical models, failure due to wear and tear would usually be a long time coming, unless there is really poor quality or a serious injury. An indication of this would be, for example, that opening and closing the safe is only possible against resistance that was not there before. In this case, it would be high time for safe maintenance.
However, additional sources of error can occur with electronically controlled locks. For example, the batteries could be dead or the control board could have a short circuit due to an unstable cold solder joint. Although it was still possible to open the safe the day before, this is no longer the case. Especially when the error occurs so abruptly and there is an electronically controlled lock, the error obviously lies in the electronics area. Purely mechanical wear and tear should only occur so suddenly in the rarest of cases.
For this reason, only high-quality batteries that correspond to the manufacturer's specifications should be used in safes with electronic locking. Depleted batteries are one of the main reasons why a safe won't open, especially if they fail unnoticed. Replacing batteries is an important part of safe maintenance and care.
What should you do if the safe no longer opens? Safe opening in an emergency
When a safe or vault is completely locked, the owners often find themselves in a challenging position, requiring an emergency safe opening. Whether due to a lost key, technical defects in the locking mechanism or the electronic control – even the most robust safes can cause problems. In such cases, quick action is required.
The manufacturer of the safe should be contacted first. They can get an initial idea based on the description and possibly offer support quickly. Many well-known manufacturers offer a corresponding service, often as part of their warranty. It is important that you have the model name of the safe ready in advance. This means the technicians can know exactly which model they are dealing with and what options there are for non-destructive opening. It is therefore advisable to keep the relevant documents carefully.
If the manufacturer cannot be reached or the model is no longer on the market, you can contact the safe's certification body. There are specially trained safe openers who often offer a 24-hour service and can help you with emergency safe opening. When choosing a service provider, it is crucial to choose a reputable and knowledgeable company.
How much does an emergency safe opening cost?
An emergency opening of a safe can cost several hundred euros. Depending on the method chosen, the costs can be even higher, especially if repairs to the safe become necessary after opening the safe. Such as replacing the control unit or repairs to the boltwork. Since safes are highly complex locking mechanisms, it is not possible to estimate in advance how much effort it would take to break into the safe. It is also not possible to predict in advance whether the safe will still be usable after the emergency opening. Therefore, a cost estimate can only be given on a case-by-case basis and cannot be given as a general estimate.
What types of emergency safe opening are there?
Breaking open the housing, which is only possible with simple safes with no or the lowest protection class. The forcible opening of the safe is carried out by specialist companies. It should be noted that the contents can be damaged and the safe is no longer usable.
When the forcible opening occurs, the lock is specifically destroyed and must then be replaced. However, with high-quality models with anti-drilling protection, this is not easily possible.
There are various ways to open the safe: On the one hand, the safe can be opened by drilling out the lock; on the other hand, it can also be opened non-destructively by a specialist company. The preferred option is always to open it non-destructively, as this will only cause minimal or no damage to the safe. However, this method requires many hours of work and a high level of specialist knowledge and expertise in the area of safe opening.
How much does a good safe cost?
When it comes to safes, you shouldn't save money in the wrong place. A safe is intended to protect valuable property from unauthorized access and must therefore be both robust and equipped with the right technology. Certified safes with adequate resistance can cost between 1,500 and 10,000 euros, depending on the value they are intended to protect and whether special fixtures such as watch winders need to be integrated. It is advisable to seek individual advice from a specialist dealer for safes and valuables in order to find the right solution for your needs.
Where is the best place for a safe?
Short: Where it cannot be found immediately.
You can generally observe some general criteria for the location of the safe:
- The safe should not be directly visible through a window
- Ideally, the safe is anchored in the wall and/or the floor
- Make sure that the safe is not permanently located humid environment. This prevents damage to the lock - the safe should not be accessible to everyone, but only to authorized people
- the safe should not be immediately recognized as such
- the installation location should be chosen so that you can use it in your everyday life
- a niche or the space behind large electrical appliances can also be a good option
- unused, dead space can make sense be used
Burglars value speed: moving a heavy piece of furniture is not only noisy, but also takes time.
Our BALZBLOCK with an integrated safe is best suited if you want to have quick access to your valuables or have no other option to integrate a safe in your living room. Our BALZBLOCK T50, for example, is perfect as a nightstand, equipped with a safe/gun cabinet. All BALZBLÖCKE can even be integrated into the burglar alarm system, also known colloquially as an alarm system.
How safe is a safe with classification 1?
A VdS Class 1 safe (also known as security level 1 or grade 1) offers tested burglary protection and optimally protects your valuables. The burglary protection is tested according to uniform criteria across Europe, which are set out in the Euro standard 1143-1. This standard provides information about the burglary protection of safes. Safes may only be tested for burglary protection by independent, approved certification bodies, such as VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH and the European Security Systems Association (ESSA).
Which security level means which insurance amount?
The insurance sums for safes are negotiated individually. The tests that determine the security levels and thus the insured amounts for safes are carried out by institutes such as the VdS in accordance with the European standard 1143 (formerly VDMA 24992). All safes in our range have passed these tests. As a rule, insurance companies cover the specified amounts. However, we recommend contacting your insurance company before purchasing to clarify the exact conditions.
Other factors when calculating the insured sums for safes: Insurance companies differentiate between commercial and private use of a safe. For example, a furniture safe located in a private bedroom may be insured for a higher amount than the same safe in a business. In addition, the insured sum can increase if the safe is additionally secured with a VdS-certified burglar alarm system.
All of the following values may vary and should always be agreed with the property insurer. These also refer exclusively to the German market:
Resistance level 1 e.g. Balzsafe ONE / Balzblock with integrated safe. Resistance value: 30/50 RU. Insured sums: private up to €65,000, commercial up to €20,000
Resistance level 2 e.g. Balzsafe TWO. Resistance value: 30/80 RU. Insured sums: private up to €100,000, commercial up to €50,000
Resistance level 3 e.g. Balzsafe THREE. Resistance value: 80/120 RU. Insured sums: private up to €200,000, commercial up to €100,000
Resistance level 4 Balzsafe FOUR. Resistance value: 120/180 RU. Insured sums: private up to €400,000, commercial up to €150,000
Which safe do I need for my valuables?
The resistance levels and fire resistance classes of safes indicate how long they protect the contents from unauthorized access and heat. The higher the resistance level, the higher the maximum insured amounts that are possible for the safe. Accordingly, the value that can be insured in the safe increases with the degree of resistance.
How should ammunition be stored in a Class 1 gun safe?
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.
How is a safe or gun safe anchored?
A grade 1 gun cabinet allows ammunition to be stored without physical separation. A separate compartment or lockable internal safe is no longer required. However, the current legal requirements of the German Weapons Act (WaffG) must always be observed.
How do I insure a safe?
If you store valuables in a safe, it is important to know what your insurance covers in the event of damage. Please note the following points:
- Check insurance requirements: Check the insurance documents for the specific requirements for a safe. Some insurance companies have special requirements for the testing institute, the weight or the lock of the safe. Further details can be found under "Requirements".
- Consult insurer: If in doubt, you should contact your insurer directly.
- Buy a suitable safe: Choose a safe that meets the requirements of your insurance.
- Note certification: Make sure that there is a certification on the inside of the safe's door. This indicates which institute carried out the certification, what security level the safe has and what weight it has.
- Collect documentation: Keep receipts, bank statements or pictures of the contents of the safe. These will help you prove loss in the event of theft.
- Have a valuation report drawn up: Have a jeweler prepare a valuation report for valuable heirlooms. This makes it easier to prove the value in the event of damage.
If you follow these steps, you will have optimally secured your valuables. Should a theft nevertheless occur, your insurance will be liable for both the loss of the valuables and any damage caused to the safe.
What is the safest safe or vault?
The safest safe or vault is undoubtedly one that is not discovered. The best security begins with choosing its location and installing it properly. An optimal safe also meets specific security requirements, which vary according to the value of the items stored inside.
In summary, the safest safe provides the most comprehensive protection possible through strategic placement, an appropriate security grade, robust anchoring and integration into an alarm system.
When does it make sense to purchase a safe at home?
If you store large amounts of money, valuable jewelry, watches or important documents at home, investing in a safe can be a sensible measure to protect against break-ins. You should take the following points into account:
A safe not only fulfills the function of keeping your valuables safe, but also has a deterrent effect on burglars. If perpetrators discover a well-secured safe in your apartment, this could lead to them quickly leaving the property. The reason: You suspect that all valuable items are in the robust safe and the effort required to crack it is too high.
How do you transport a safe?
If you would like to transport your safe yourself, there are various tools available that can make the process much easier. For a fair price, you can, for example, rent hand trucks, furniture lifts or electric stair climbers that are specially designed for heavy and bulky goods.
If you are unsure or would prefer to leave the transport in professional hands, we also offer an assembly service. Please contact us for further information or to book an installation.
How heavy should a safe be?
The weight of a safe is a central factor when it comes to security aspects and insurance regulations. The question often arises as to how heavy a safe must be to ensure optimal protection and comply with insurance guidelines.
Insurance regulations and recommendations: Insurance companies have different requirements for the weight of safes that are used in the private sector. Typically, a multi-wall steel cabinet with a minimum weight of 200kg is recommended. Alternatively, the safe must be properly anchored to guarantee insurance coverage.
Some insurers set higher requirements and require a minimum weight of 500 kg or even 700 kg, especially for safes with higher resistance levels. These higher weights are often necessary to ensure comprehensive insurance coverage.
Weight does not equal security: Modern safe designs today offer a high level of security, even if they are comparatively light. Many safes meet the required burglary resistance tests despite their low weight. The decisive factor for insurance coverage is therefore not only the weight, but also the correct anchoring of the safe.
Safes that weigh less than 1000 kg are usually equipped with special devices for fastening to the floor. Furniture safes and smaller safes also offer fastening options on the rear wall.
Proper anchoring for maximum protection: The professional anchoring of a safe can make a decisive contribution to security. In order to receive full insurance coverage, the anchoring should be carried out by professional fitters. This service can be conveniently ordered when the safe is delivered.
Conclusion: The required weight of a safe varies depending on the insurance company and its specific regulations. While heavier safes often meet higher security standards, modern, lighter safes also offer reliable protection provided they are anchored correctly. In order to ensure optimal insurance coverage, it is advisable to have the anchoring carried out by professionals.
Important information about transporting safes:
Due to the dimensions and weight of a safe, it is often necessary to clarify in advance whether transport over steps or stairs is possible. In order to avoid possible transport problems during delivery, we ask you to fill out our transport questionnaire and send it back to us. This questionnaire will help us clarify all relevant details and ensure that the delivery goes smoothly.
How to open a safe if the code is forgotten?
First of all, it is important to stay calm. Often the forgotten code comes back to mind after you have calmed down. If this is not the case or the code is not known, for example because the safe was inherited, there are several ways to open the safe. You can use an emergency key if available, enter the master code or contact the manufacturer or a specialist company for professional safe openings.
Opening the safe without a code: using the emergency opening key
Not all safes with combination locks are equipped with an emergency opening key. If such a key exists, it should be stored carefully, ideally outside the home or with a trusted person. Lockers at banks are also ideal for safely storing emergency opening keys. This is particularly important because an easily accessible emergency opening key could make it easier for potential burglars to access the safe.
If you cannot find the emergency opening key or are not sure whether your safe has one, we recommend that you carefully check the safe's operating instructions. In many cases, the instructions provide information on whether a mechanical opening aid is available and how it can be used in an emergency. If all your efforts are unsuccessful, contact the manufacturer or a specialist safe opening company.
Safe opening with master code
Your safe's instruction manual may provide information on how to use a master code if one is set up. The master code makes it possible to bypass the regular entry of the number combination and open the safe directly. This function is particularly useful if the regular PIN has been forgotten or is not at hand.
If you do not have a master code or cannot remember it, you should under no circumstances try to force open the safe yourself or hire a locksmith. Opening the safe yourself or using a locksmith can not only be very costly, but can also lead to damage to the safe, which can result in additional repair costs. Please contact the manufacturer or a specialist company who has the necessary expertise and the appropriate tools to open the safe safely and without damage.
Action if the safe key is lost
If you have lost the key to a mechanical safe lock, it is important to remain calm and proceed systematically. First, think about when and where you last saw the key. Maybe you recently changed the storage location and forgot about it? It is worth thoroughly checking all possible places where the key could be stored, such as jacket pockets, drawers or pockets.
If the search is unsuccessful, the next step is to contact the manufacturer or dealer of the safe. They often offer support, be it by providing replacement keys or special procedures in the event of a key loss. It is also advisable to check the safe's instruction manual as it may contain valuable tips and instructions.
If neither searching nor contacting the manufacturer or dealer helps, there is the option of using specialized services.
Do not hesitate to contact us if you need assistance. Our team is at your disposal to find a quick and safe solution. It is important to avoid unauthorized attempts to open the safe as this may cause irreparable damage.
The complexity of opening a safe
If you have forgotten the code for your safe or the key is lost, it can be tempting to contact a locksmith. However, it is important to realize that opening a safe requires far more expertise and precision than opening a regular door lock or car lock. Safe locks are complex and highly specialized mechanisms that are specifically designed for maximum security. They differ significantly in their design and functionality from traditional locks.
The technology behind safe locks can range from mechanical combinations and electrical codes to biometric systems. Each type requires specific knowledge and specialized tools to be opened safely and efficiently without damaging the safe or its contents. An inexperienced attempt to open the safe yourself or through an unspecialized service can not only affect the value of the safe, but also endanger the security of the entire system.
For professional and safe safe opening, you should therefore only contact experts in this field. Experts who specialize in safes and security solutions have the necessary know-how to safely open even complex safe systems without damaging them. They are equipped with the latest techniques and tools to ensure access to your safe without taking unnecessary risks. So when you rely on professional support, you can be sure that your safe will be opened with the utmost care and expertise.
Opening a safe yourself: advantages and disadvantages
If you have forgotten the safe code or lost the key, you may think about opening the safe yourself. However, this attempt often results in forced opening, which can not only damage the safe but also endanger the contents stored inside. While inexpensive safes and cash boxes may not offer much resistance, Class A or B safes are not easy to open. For safes of classes 0, I or II or higher, it is advisable not to attempt to open them yourself. In such cases, it is safer and more effective to call in a professional service provider to open the safe professionally and without causing damage.
Be careful when opening old safes
If you have inherited an old safe or safe from centuries past, special caution is required. Such historical models should under no circumstances be opened by force, be it with a hammer, angle grinder or similar tools. The reason: Older safes could contain asbestos, which can release harmful fibers if damaged. It is therefore advisable to contact a professional who has experience in dealing with old security devices in order to avoid possible health risks and to open the safe safely.
Opening a safe: What to do if the key or code is missing?
If you have lost the key to your safe or have forgotten the code, stay calm and avoid trying to open the safe on your own. Opening it forcibly without proper expertise can damage the safe and make the situation worse. If you do not have emergency options such as spare keys or master codes on hand, please contact a specialized professional. This can open the safe safely and professionally without destroying it. You can find our contact details at the top of this page.

Is a medication safe BTM compliant?
A medication safe is BTM-compliant if it meets the legal requirements for the safe storage of narcotics - this includes VdS or ECBS certification and at least resistance level 1 according to EN 1143-1. All BALZWERK® safes meet these standards and are ideal for doctor's offices, pharmacies and other medical facilities. To ensure that all requirements are met in your specific facility, we recommend contacting the responsible authority or insurance company.
How should I store narcotics in the doctor's office?
According to the BtMVV, narcotics must be stored safely, protected against tampering and only accessible to authorized personnel. A certified BTM safe with VdS or ECB-S approval and at least resistance level 1 according to EN 1143-1 is required. Our BALZWERK® safes meet these requirements. Since requirements can vary in detail depending on the spatial conditions and type of use, the exact solution should always be coordinated with the responsible authority or insurance company for your respective practice.
What requirements does a BTM cabinet have to meet?
A BTM cabinet must comply with the requirements of the Narcotics Prescription Ordinance (§ 15 BtMVV). It must be lockable, firmly anchored and secured against unauthorized access. Our BALZWERK® safes fully meet these requirements - they are VdS or ECB-S certified and have at least resistance level 1 according to EN 1143-1. Since details can vary depending on the facility (e.g. doctor's office, pharmacy or clinic), the specific implementation should always be coordinated in advance with the responsible authority or insurance company for your project.
